Chora

Chora

Chora is the Greek word for 'village'. On most Greek islands the main town is called 'Chora'. Serifos’ Chora is built amphitheatrically on a rocky hill overlooking the island and harbor from the top. It is a small and elegant village with white-washed houses and colorful painted window frames and doors, all built in the Cycladic traditional style. Stroll along Perseas, Polydictes and Cyclops street and learn about the island’s mythology... the Cyclops and Medusa.
Chora is divided into two neighborhoods, Ano (Upper) and Kato (Lower) Chora. Here you find also the administrations of the island, the municipality is right on the main square. The colorful neoclassical building is very impressive and probably the most beautiful municipality of the Cycladic islands. The churches Agios Athanasios (Ano Chora) and Evangelistria (Kato Chora) are the most important on the island. Big celebrations as Easter, Christmas and the namedays (of these two churches) are held here as well as Sunday's services. Strolling around the winding narrow streets of Chora, you will discover so many beautiful places. And to relax or shop, at Ano Chora you will find nice kafeneions, bars, taverns/restaurant and shops. Just start from the bus terminal to the smaller platia and then walk your way up to the main square, to the top of the village to Agios Konstatinos church. The view is breathtaking up there, especially with the full moon.
